How Freight Railroads Transport Goods Through Intermodal
Every day the intermodal network transports goods from around the world to the American consumer and American-made products to consumers around the world.
Intermodal transportation is the seamless movement of goods utilizing multiple modes of transportation to produce the most efficient and cost-effective move possible. The efficiency gains realized by intermodal shippers help to make U.S. businesses more competitive in the global economy.
Freight rail is an integral part of this system, providing affordable and reliable long-haul movement of goods while working cooperatively with competitors like trucks who are better suited to short-haul freight movement.

Enjoy watching the extremely rare footage of Brand new Trucks being shipped on Rails. Ashok Leyland 1616il (Yellow) and U-Truck (White) , 64 Ashok Leyland Trucks moving Southwards on 32 Wagons. This is one of the cheapest ways to transport Automobiles using Railways which is much faster and safer compared to Road Transportation which would require several huge Trucks to load these.
A regular service called Roll on – Roll off (RO-RO) is offered for transporting Loaded Trucks over Rails. Presently Konkan Railway is the only Zone offering such a Service in India . The service is available from Kolad (145 kms. from Mumbai), Verna (12 kms. from Madgaon) upto Surathkal (20 kms. from Mangalore) and vice-versa. There are plans to implement these Services in other parts of India soon.
Benefits of RORO services : -
RORO services save precious fuel for the nation.
Speed of Ro-Ro train is fast enough as compared to movement by Road
Terminal time of loading/unloading is just 15 to 20 minutes in Ro-Ro.
Better turnaround of trucks.
No risk of accidents.
No wear and tear of trucks.
Less pollution as trucks are not plying on the roads.
No hassle of octroi, toll etc.
Train : 17210 Kakinada Town - Bangalore City - Seshadri Express.
Locomotive : WAP4 LGD & WAG7 BZA Electric Shed.
Location : Tyakal, Karnataka.
