Rail transport
Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods, by way of wheeled vehicles running on rails.
It is also commonly referred to as train transport. In contrast to road transport, where vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles are also directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Track usually consists of steel rails, installed on ties (sleepers) and ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as slab track where the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface.
Rolling stock in railway transport systems generally has lower frictional resistance when compared with highway vehicles and the passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilities. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electric power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system. Railways are a safe land transport system when compared to other forms of transport. Railway transport is capable of high levels of passenger and cargo utilization and energy efficiency, but is often less flexible and more capital-intensive than highway transport is, when lower traffic levels are considered.

79 Railway Squadron
The modern-day 79 Railway Squadron was part of the 17 Port and Maritime Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps, of the British Army. They were responsible for maintaining and providing the British Army with its railway transportation requirements.
Originally, the Railway Squadron started life in the Royal Engineers at Longmoor Military Camp in Hampshire. They were known as the Longmoor Military Railway and operated steam locomotives. The squadron eventually moved to Monchengladbach in West Germany and in the fullness of time became 79 Railway Squadron, Royal Corps of Transport. The locomotives were all diesel and for a while the future of the squadron seemed uncertain until 1983, when a multimillion-pound makeover was begun. New locomotives started to arrive, and the operating yard at Monchengladbach got a makeover.
The squadron was relocated to Marchwood, near Southampton, in 1999. It was taken under command of 17 Port & Maritime Regiment RLC, and renamed 79 Port Enabling Squadron, with the addition of a troop of Vehicle Support Specialist (VSS) personnel.

Enjoy watching the extremely rare footage of Brand new Trucks being shipped on Rails. Ashok Leyland 1616il (Yellow) and U-Truck (White) , 64 Ashok Leyland Trucks moving Southwards on 32 Wagons. This is one of the cheapest ways to transport Automobiles using Railways which is much faster and safer compared to Road Transportation which would require several huge Trucks to load these. A regular service called Roll on – Roll off (RO-RO) is offered for transporting Loaded Trucks over Rails. Presently Konkan Railway is the only Zone offering such a Service in India . The service is available from Kolad (145 kms. from Mumbai), Verna (12 kms. from Madgaon) upto Surathkal (20 kms. from Mangalore) and vice-versa. Enjoy watching the extremely rare footage of Brand new Trucks being shipped on Rails. Ashok Leyland 1616il (Yellow) and U-Truck (White) , 64 Ashok Leyland Trucks moving Southwards on 32 Wagons. This is one of the cheapest ways to transport Automobiles using Railways which is much faster and safer compared to Road Transportation which would require several huge Trucks to load these.
A regular service called Roll on – Roll off (RO-RO) is offered for transporting Loaded Trucks over Rails. Presently Konkan Railway is the only Zone offering such a Service in India . The service is available from Kolad (145 kms. from Mumbai), Verna (12 kms. from Madgaon) upto Surathkal (20 kms. from Mangalore) and vice-versa. There are plans to implement these Services in other parts of India soon.

Speed of Ro-Ro train is fast enough as compared to movement by Road
Terminal time of loading/unloading is just 15 to 20 minutes in Ro-Ro.

No hassle of octroi, toll etc.

Rail transport
Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods, by way of wheeled vehicles running on rails.
It is also commonly referred to as train transport. In contrast to road transport, where vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles are also directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Track usually consists of steel rails, installed on ties (sleepers) and ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as slab track where the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface.
Rolling stock in railway transport systems generally has lower frictional resistance when compared with highway vehicles and the passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilities. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electric power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system. Railways are a safe land transport system when compared to other forms of transport. Railway transport is capable of high levels of passenger and cargo utilization and energy efficiency, but is often less flexible and more capital-intensive than highway transport is, when lower traffic levels are considered.
